Trappe Fire Company's Martin Luther King Day Drop-Off Site Helps Cradles to Crayons Achieve its Largest-Ever Collection Event -

Kristin Norwood and daughters Laura (at left) and Caitlin of Collegeville showed their spirit of service on Martin Luther King Day of Service by donating their no longer needed clothes, shoes and toys for Cradles to Crayons at the Trappe Fire Company drop-off site. Kristin is the company's recording secretary. The Norwood family's donation, earmarked for distribution to children, birth to age 12, living in low-income or homeless situations in the five-county southeastern Pennsylvania area, was part of the largest region-wide product collection in Cradles to Crayons (www.cradlestocrayons.org) history.

Local Pediatric Group Takes on Challenge of High Poverty Level among Area Children

A group of local pediatricians is lending a helping hand in the urgent effort to address poverty among children, today the highest it has been in America in more than 50 years. That eye-opening fact has led Lockman & Lubell Pediatric Associates to embark on a mission to enlist area families to gather children’s items that no longer fit, have fallen out of favor, or simply were never used, and bring them to their Commerce Drive office in Fort Washington, which is serving as a donation site for area nonprofit Cradles to Crayons.

“One out of every five children in the five-county southeastern Pennsylvania area lives in poverty,”* said Bruce E. Lockman, M.D., “a number that is increasing every year, not just in Philadelphia, but in the suburbs as well...where rate of poverty is actually increasing faster!” * We want to make it as convenient as possible for families to convert children’s items that are no longer needed into children’s items that can be put to good use by the area’s low-income and/or homeless children.”

Lockman & Lubell Pediatric Associates is located at 270 Commerce Drive, #250, in Fort Washington. 215-653-0600.

Items in greatest need include new and nearly new infants’ and children’s clothing, socks and underwear, warm coats, hats, footwear, newborn baby items, baby safety equipment, books, and arts and crafts/school supplies. A more detailed list of needed items (and unacceptable ones too) is available at www.cradlestocrayons.org/philadelphia/most-needed-items.

“An added benefit of this collection,” said Dr. Lockman, “is that ‘reusing and recycling’ these children’s products – well before the end of their useful lives – keeps them out of landfills…and that means helping to clean the environment.”

*In the photo: Ardsley resident Maria Buccafuri watches as her children, five-year-old Christina and eight-year-old David, do their part in helping Cradles to Crayons serve the area's low-income and/or homeless children. They are shown at Lockman & Lubell Pediatric Associates' office at 270 Commerce Drive, #250, in Fort Washington.

Every Vote for Cradles to Crayons in 6abc Virtual Book Drive Puts Disney Book in the Hands of a Local Disadvantaged Child

Regional Nonprofit Urges Community To Take Part in Book Drive

“Every vote for Cradles to Crayons in the 6abc Virtual Book Drive means another great Disney book will get into the hands of one of the tens of thousands of young children in the Greater Philadelphia region living in a low income situation.”

Calling it the homestretch in a race that that could pay off in thousands of books for the area’s disadvantaged young children, Cradles to Crayons Executive Director Michal Smith today urged all friends to cast a vote for the local nonprofit organization as the “6abc, Disney XD, Marvel, First Book Virtual Book Drive” begins its final two weeks.

“Voting could not be easier,” Smith explained. “We are asking all our friends to have their families, friends, neighbors, coworkers and others in their community to go to www.facebook.com/6abcPhiladelphia, become a fan, and click on the ‘Virtual Book Drive’ tab, or for a direct link to vote, click tinyurl.com/6abcbookdrive. And” she continued, “they can vote as frequently as they wish before the Drive concludes at the end of this month.

“For the children we serve,” Smith noted, “some 77 percent of whom live in families with household incomes below $15,000 a year – considerably lower than the U.S.Department of Health and Human Services-defined federal poverty levelof $23,550 annually for a family of four – we are talking about more than books,” she stressed, “we are talking about literacy!

“This is such a vital effort,” Smith concluded, “and the payoff is guaranteed. Every vote for Cradles to Crayons in 6abc's ‘Virtual Book Drive’ between now and February 28 means one additional book will be donated to Cradles to Crayons for distribution to a disadvantaged child in our community, which just could be,” she added, “the only books this child receives all year.”

Springfield Mall and Cradles to Crayons Welcome Easter Bunny with Eggceptional Effort to Collect Clothes for Children in Need

Shoppers respond to needs of the region’s homeless and low-incomechildren

SPRINGFIELD, March 4– The Easter Bunny will be at Center Court at Springfield Mall, beginning Friday, March 8, not only to help launch his namesake holiday at the major Delaware County shopping hub, but also to kick off a joint clothes collection drive with Cradles to Crayons for the region’s disadvantaged children.

The collection effort – to continue through March 30 – is a collaboration between the more than 70 merchants at the Mall and Cradles to Crayons, the local nonprofit that provides children, from birth to age 12, living in low-income and homeless situations with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play.

The Easter Bunny is scheduled to hop into Center Court at the Mall, 1250 Baltimore Pike, at 10:00 a.m. on March 8.

Shoppers who drop off donations of new or nearly new clothing (from footwear to winter coats, and new socks and underwear) at the Mall’s Customer Service center (located near Ruby Tuesday's) will receive a discount off photos with the Easter Bunny. Shoppers will also be able to select from baskets of “Easter eggs,” individualized egg-shaped cards that identify an item of clothing needed by an area low-income and/or homeless child, and purchase items on the eggs from stores within the mall. The purchases will be gathered by courtesy desk staff and provided to Cradles to Crayons, from which local social service agencies, including homeless and domestic violence shelters, schools, and foster homes, will distribute them to the children in their care.

“Springfield Mall is proud to host this important donation drive benefitting children within our communities,” said Maureen Weir, the Mall’s senior marketing director. “We are pleased to join forces with Cradles to Crayons and Delaware County Moms, and look forward to working with our shoppers in supporting such a worthy cause.”

“Cradles to Crayons cannot thank enough the Springfield Mall and its scores of merchants who are making it possible – and convenient – for shoppers to help the one in five children in this region who live in poverty,” said Michal Smith, executive director of the Cradles to Crayons. “Families living in poverty struggle to pay for rent, utilities and food, so warm clothing, coats, and shoes that fit are often completely out of reach.”

Alliance facilitates expanded services for local Dream Camp families and their children

PHILADELPHIA, March 12, 2013– ESF Dream Camp Foundation today announced a partnership with Cradles to Crayons that will enable it to expand the services it offers local Dream Camp families and their children.

Dream Camp provides underserved children with after-school, mentoring and summer programs at Girard College in Philadelphia (and at Trinity College in Hartford, CT).

Cradles to Crayons, the West Conshohocken-based nonprofit, will provide everyday essentials, including clothing, shoes, coats, toys, books, school supplies and infant safety equipment, to Dream Camp families in-need, free of charge.

“We are very excited to embark on this partnership,” said Michael Rouse, ESF Dream Camp Foundation co-founder, “with such a remarkable and generous organization.” Michael Rouse said, “Our Philadelphia-area Dream Camp families are already taking advantage of the Cradles to Crayons program.”

The ESF Dream Camp Foundation is supported by generous individual donors, foundations, and by Bryn Mawr-based ESF Summer Camps, a 31-year-old company that provides award-winning summer camps and specialty programs for children between the ages of 3-15 at Haverford School (Haverford), Episcopal Academy (Newtown Square), Montgomery School (Chester Springs), Rosemont College (Rosemont), Norwood Fontbonne Academy (Chestnut Hill), The Philadelphia Phillies, and Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union.

Dream Camp conducts a year-round program for the area’s underserved children – an After-School Academy Program and a Summer Program – in addition to a series of Family Services and Workshops.

“We are so proud to be working with the ESF Dream Camp Foundation,” said Michal Smith, Cradles to Crayons executive director. ”It provides such wonderful services to children in-need throughout the southeastern Pennsylvania area, which we will be able to complement with our KidPacks and backpacks that provide age- and gender-specific supplies of everyday essentials and school supplies year-round.”

Dream Camp families that want to participate in the program with Cradles to Crayons pass along their needs to the ESF Dream Camp Foundation staff, who coordinate the order placement and pick-up from Cradles to Crayons’ Giving Factory in West Conshohocken, and then deliver the items to Girard College in North Philadelphia, where Dream Camp families pick up the items.

Cradles to Crayons, which addresses the poverty faced by one in five children in the five-county southeastern Pennsylvania area has served more than 100,000 disadvantaged youngsters, birth to age 12, since its establishment here in 2007.

Cradles to Crayons Now Accepting Applications for its Teen Leadership Corps

Cradles to Crayons announced today that it is accepting applications for its Teen Leadership Corps, now through Wednesday, May 1.

The program provides high school students throughout the Greater Philadelphia region a unique, hands-on opportunity to develop or improve their organizational and leadership skills, while gaining a firsthand understanding of the importance of volunteering in their communities.

Now in its sixth year, the Teen Leadership Corps program enables the students to gain or hone leadership skills, and then put into practice what they’ve learned by engaging their communities in product collections and by raising awareness about the need for and work of Cradles to Crayons. Last year, more than 40,000 children, 0-12, living in low-income and homeless situations throughout the region, were served by Cradles to Crayons.

“This could certainly be a life-altering experience for the selectedTeen Leadership Corps members,”said Michal Smith,Cradles to Crayons’ executive director, “as they come face-to-face with poverty, for many for the first time; learn about the acute need locally for our services; and confront the challenge of keeping pace with the growing number of children in ourcommunity who need the clothing, footwear, books, toys and school supplies – everyday essentials too easily taken for granted – that we provide.”

The 2013 Teen Leadership Corps program will begin June 24 and extend though the year. Each member of the Teen Leadership Corps will be required to –

  • Attend one training session at the Cradles to Crayons “Giving Factory” warehouse in late June.
  • Work 15 two-hour shifts (total of 30 hours) from July to the end of the year at the warehouse.
  • Complete one product drive in their neighborhood, community group, place of worship, etc.

As one of the Greater Philadelphia region’s leading volunteer organizations,” Smith explained, “it is central to our mission to provide a venue for people of all ages to give back to their communities. Teen Leadership Corps is how we fulfill that commitment to a group that will become tomorrow’s volunteer leaders.”

Members will be selected based on their application and phone interview. Spots for this program are limited. Deadline for applying forthe 2013 Cradles to Crayons’ Teen Leadership Corps is Wednesday, May 1; accepted applicants will be notified by Wednesday, May 15, 2013.

Auto dealerships in Conshohocken and Springfield, Delco, to serve as collection points

JUST IN TIME FOR SPRING CLEANING: A timely – and vitally needed – effort by local nonprofit Cradles to Crayons to collect new and nearly new clothing and other items for area children living in low-income and homeless situations is getting a giant-size power boost from the Conicelli dealerships in Conshohocken and Springfield.

Beginning Monday, April 15, and continuing through May 1 – in support of the joint Great Green Spring Clean and Drive initiative –Conicelli Autoplex, which includes Conicelli Toyota Scion, Honda, Nissan and Hyundaion Ridge Pike in Conshohocken, and at the Conicelli Toyota Scion dealership on Baltimore Pike in Springfield, will serve as collection points for the donated children’s items that have been forgotten, no longer fit, have fallen out of favor, or simply were never used. Dropoff boxes will be located at each location.

“Not only do we want to make it as easy and convenient as possible for local families to drop off the items they have rooted out from drawers, closets and other convenient ‘hiding places,’” said Lori Hammond, Internet director/partner of the Conicelli dealerships, “but we want to offer an additional incentive for them to bring these items to our locations: an opportunity to test drive one of our new hybrid-, electric- or natural gas-powered cars.

“We will also be having a drawing for some great prizes on Saturday, April 20, at the Conicelli Toyota service building at our Conshohocken location and our Toyota Scion new car showroom in our Springfield, Delaware County location,” she added, “where our hybrid vehicle display and collection boxes will be located for the big drop-off day event. The prizes will include two complimentary emissions inspections as well as a $100 Whole Foods gift card.

“It’s a natural tie-in,” Lori continued, “to the Great Green Spring Clean and Drive message: declutter your home; reduce, repurpose and recycle children’s everyday essential items – well before the end of their useful lives; and keep them out of landfills and reduce our carbon footprint. That all adds up to helping clean the environment,” she added, “which is exactly what our line of energy-efficient automobiles is intended to help do!”

Cradles to Crayons accepts items for children in-need, birth through 12, including new and nearly new infants’ and children’s clothing, socks and underwear, coats, hats, footwear, newborn baby items, baby safety equipment, books, and arts and crafts/school supplies. A more detailed list of needed items (and unacceptable ones too) is available at www.cradlestocrayons.org/philadelphia/most-needed-items.

The Conicelli Autoplex (www.conicelliautoplex.com) in Conshohocken is located at 1200 Ridge Pike, in Springfield at 860 Baltimore Pike.
