Cradles to Crayons Receives Coveted 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator for 7th Straight Year

CAMBRIDGE, MA—AUGUST 24, 2015—Cradles to Crayons’ today announced that its sound fiscal management practices and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for the 7th consecutive year. Only 2% of the more than 8,000 United States organizations rated by the nation’s largest independent charity evaluator achieve that mark.

Since 2002, using objective, data-driven analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology. These “Accountability & Transparency” metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which charities have “best practices” that minimize the chance of unethical activities and whether they freely share basic information about their organization with their donors and other stakeholders.

“Cradles to Crayons’ coveted 4-star rating puts it in a very select group of high-performing charities,” according to Tim Gamory, COO of Charity Navigator. “Out of the thousands of nonprofits Charity Navigator evaluates, only one out of four earns 4 stars—a rating that demands rigor, responsibility, and commitment to openness. Cradles to Crayons’ supporters should feel much more confident that their hard-earned dollars are being used efficiently and responsibly when it acquires such a high rating.”

“We are thrilled to receive this recognition for the 7th year in a row,” said Lynn Margherio, Cradles to Crayons’ Founder and CEO. “It affirms our commitment to excellence in the nonprofit community—and to the important work we do, providing the essentials for childhood. We greatly value the critical resources our donors and volunteers so generously provide us and take our fiduciary and governance responsibilities very seriously.”

Working through its network of hundreds of Nonprofit Social Service Partners, and supported by tens of thousands of volunteers, Cradles to Crayons annually helps more than 150,000 children living in low-income and homeless situations.

Bank of America’s Financial and Volunteer Support Expands Cradles to Crayons® Mission Nationally
Ten years of corporate volunteering and financial giving deepen impact in Massachusetts, Greater Philadelphia, and Chicago

CAMBRIDGE, M.A., OCTOBER 29, 2015–Bank of America presented Cradles to Crayons with a $295,000.00 check today, to fund national growth and support mission-driven work in Massachusetts ($50,000), Greater Philadelphia ($20,000), and Chicago ($25,000). The donation came in conjunction with a volunteer visit to Cradles to Crayons Giving Factory® where Bank of America executives and teams put together customized packages—containing one week’s worth of essentials such as clothing and books—for local children in need.

Bank of America, Cradles to Crayons’ first national partner, has cumulatively contributed 6,400 hours of service (by more than 2,500 employees) and $1.2 million in funding since 2005. Their support for Cradles to Crayons’ national expansion has been instrumental in growing the organization to meet the goal of establishing three additional sites by 2018. This year, Cradles to Crayons will serve 119,000 children in Massachusetts and 53,100 in Greater Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and expects to begin serving children in Greater Chicago, Illinois.

Bank of America also plays important volunteer leadership roles in the organization. Dean Athanasia, President of Preferred & Small Business Banking and Cohead of Consumer Banking, has served on the Cradles to Crayons National Board of Directors since 2014.

“Bank of America has provided key long-time support for our growth—in Massachusetts, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Nationally. They have been behind us for major organizational milestones,” said Lynn Margherio, Cradles to Crayons Founder and CEO. “This gift supports our next phase and helps lay the groundwork necessary to serve children in additional communities across the country.”

Bank of America promotes growth and stability in global communities by investing company-wide resources in nonprofit organizations like Cradles to Crayons. Through these contributions, Cradles to Crayons can continue to expand and make an increasing impact on children living in poverty across the country. Cradles to Crayons was awarded Bank of America’s esteemed Neighborhood Builders Award—the nation’s largest philanthropic investment in nonprofit leadership development—for Massachusetts in 2010 and Greater Philadelphia in 2012.

“Cradles to Crayons provides the basic essentials that every child needs and deserves,“ said Dean Athanasia. “Our longstanding relationship from the organization’s first days here in Boston, to more recent partnerships in Philadelphia and Chicago, truly brings Bank of America and its employees so much more than we give—by connecting us to children in-need in a very meaningful way that resonates with our employees, our customers, and the communities we serve.”

Cradles To Crayons Seeks Help On Giving Tuesday

BOSTON (CBS) – Inside the Cradles to Crayons 30,000 square foot Giving Factory in Brighton, volunteers are in overdrive.

“People are either picking up or dropping off all day,” Mike Scottberg from Cradles To Crayons said.

Cradles to Crayons serves more than 100,000 of the state’s most needy and homeless children from birth to 12 years old. They provide the essential items kids need to keep warm and feel loved.

“We have a specifically designed kid packs that come with socks, gloves, hats, toys, jackets and all the essentials for the kid,” Scottberg said.

Cradles to Crayons is trying to serve 32,000 kids through their winter program but right now they need help. “All of these bins upside down are things we are currently out of. Boots are a huge need from 0 to 12 years old,” Cradles to Crayons’ Kirsten Sims said.

Executive Director Sharon Reilly says they need more winter gear items. “We want people to honor what Giving Tuesday is and dig little deeper and do more,” Reilly said.

In order to help programs like Smart From The Start In Quincy. “It’s extremely important and we are very grateful for Cradles to Crayons. This means our kids are warm,” Anna Barto said.

Reilly said it’s about making a difference. “We are in the business of making sure kids thrive what’s not to love about that,” Reilly said.

Tavarozzi: Learning how to give back

$
0
0
My mother raised me on her own. There was never any effort from my father, not even child support or a phone call on my birthday.

I know what it’s like seeing a parent struggle; I know what it’s like to not have enough money to make ends meet. As I grew up, I realized that I was not the only child to face challenges like this. There are children everywhere facing their own struggles every day – some of them far worse than mine.

I want to do whatever it takes to help someone in need, especially children facing struggles similar to those I know all too well. This realization inspired me to give back – to serve my community and to make change happen in this world.

Cradles to Crayons is an organization that started in Boston and distributes clothing, books, shoes, and other essentials to children in need from birth to age 12 at no cost.

When I heard that Cradles to Crayons was looking for a journalism intern, I immediately jumped on that opportunity. Even though I didn’t need the credits as part of my Lasell College degree, I wanted to spend my time helping children who deserve a better life.

During my second month interning, I accompanied the team for a coat distribution. Throughout the winter months, Cradles to Crayons runs the Gear Up for Winter program, a season-long event that collects and distributes warm winter essentials such as hats, gloves, coats, and boots.

The distribution that I went to was at a local motel. The families being housed there were either low-income or experiencing homelessness and they had requested a winter coat through one of our Cradles to Crayons nonprofit social service partners.

I took photos of the children receiving coats and asked parents if they would like to speak about the impact that Cradles to Crayons has had on their family. This was extremely nerve-wracking for me, and made me overwhelmingly emotional.

Seeing the young children’s faces light up with excitement over something as simple as a winter coat was heartbreaking. Hearing a mother say her daughter would walk to school in the cold without a coat if Cradles to Crayons wasn’t there brought tears to my eyes.

In those moments I realized that I made the right choice applying to Cradles to Crayons. It makes my hours of work in the office worth it.

I am a student teacher at Lasell. My class is all college freshmen – many not familiar with Cradles to Crayons. As my internship progressed, I decided to have my students volunteer at The Giving Factory, the 32,500-square-foot warehouse where 35,00 volunteers come annually to sort, clean and package donated items. I wanted them to understand the passion that I have for this organization.

My students came to volunteer in October and the experience was life changing for them. Many of them never knew the amount of need we have right in our own communities and they wanted to make a change.

For two weeks, we held a dollar drive and a clothing donation drive with the goal to collect 50 articles of clothing to donate. The students asked each person that walked by for a dollar.

Once the drive ended, the students and I had collected $576. We had also filled six bins with clothes. The fact that 45 first-year students were able to collect over $500 was remarkable.

Everyone experiences challenges in life and the reality is that some people are still facing them, especially children. As the close-knit and family oriented community that Boston is, we should all recognize what some people in our community face every day. No child should have to walk to school during the peak of winter without a coat. No parent should have to worry about whether or not their child has clothes that fit.

These are issues that everyone should be aware of and that we should all work as a community to end. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to volunteer my time as an intern at Cradles to Crayons and I hope that my students will continue to volunteer when I graduate in May. The more we make people aware of the need in Massachusetts, the more families we will be able to help.

Winter Coats Donated For Homeless School Children

A national charity that provides babies and pre-teen children living in poverty with essentials including clothing, shoes, toys, and school supplies is expanding into western Massachusetts from its base in the Boston area.

Before the new school year started last fall in Springfield, 6,400 children received backpacks full of school supplies at no cost to their families.  Now, more than 1,000 homeless children in the Springfield schools will get free winter coats.  The donations are the product of a new partnership between the city’s public schools and Cradles to Crayons.

"We want to demonstrate our continued commitment to children in western Mass," said Sharon Reilly, executive director of Cradles to Crayons-Massachusetts,. who said the Cambridge- headquartered organization as a plan to expand services to western Massachusetts during the next three years.

"When we look at poverty is across the Commonwealth, Suffolk (County) is the largest and then there is Hampden. So, it makes sense for use to be here," she said.

The organization estimates there are 300,000 children under the age of 12 who live in poverty in Massachusetts. This winter, Cradles to Crayons plans to distribute customized clothing packages to about 32,500 children.

Reilly explains that Cradles to Crayons operates in a way similar to a food bank.  The organization accepts cash donations to purchase the clothing and other items that are warehoused and then uses a network of social service agencies and schools to reach the local kids.

"Our model is also based on recycling. About 75 percent of the products we distribute comes from people like me and you cleaning out our closets," said Reilly. "Because kids grow so fast we are still able to get quality product from families."

More than 1,000 children’s winter coats supplied by Cradles to Crayons were picked up last week by representatives from family homeless shelters and other agencies at the Springfield school department’s Parent and Community Engagement Center.

"This is Christmas for us today! It really is,"  exclaimed  Pat Spradley, Chief of Parent and Community Engagement for the Springfield schools, who said through the partnership with Cradles to Crayons, over 2,000 coats, hats, and pairs of gloves will be given out by mid-January.

Springfield Superintendent of Schools Dan Warwick said children will often stay home from school if their families cannot afford to buy winter clothing.

"We do the best we can as educators to try to provide the right support for our families," said Warwick, who added, "It is agencies like Cradles to Crayons and Sharon and her team who step forward during this season when it is so important to meet the families' needs."

More than 80 percent of Springfield public school students are from families that live below the federal poverty level.
