Saturday, June 15, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., set aside for collection of donated items

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA, June 13, 2013 – Conshohocken Fire Company No. 2 will serve as a community collection site this Saturday, June 15, in support of Cradles to Crayons’ month-long “Gear Up for Baby” campaign.

It is one of a number of baby-centric events throughout the region during June designed to spur community collections for most-needed baby items, including diapers, baby hygiene items, wipes, infant socks, baby safety equipment, and other new or gently used baby items needed by infants.

The Fire Company, located at 819 Fayette Street, will acceptdonated items from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“There are nearly 100,000 children, aged 0 to 24 months, living in poverty-stricken situations in the Greater Philadelphia region,” said Michal Smith, executive director of Cradles to Crayons. “The goal of our Gear Up for Baby drive is to be able to provide them the everyday essentials that they need to survive and thrive.”

Foundation for Babies is joining with Cradles to Crayons in the 2013 drive for diapers and other infant and toddler items, a partnership that Smith said her organization was thrilled to embrace. “Foundation for Babies,” she said, “is the standard by which all diaper drives are measured; we welcome them in a mutual effort to help the youngest children in this area.”

Cradles to Crayons mounted the month-long Gear Up for Baby drive throughout the region in recognition of the specialized needs of babies in their first, vulnerable years of life. For a familyliving in this area, it costs more than $10,000 to support a child in her/his first year of life. “With such expensive requirements,” Smith declared, “many of the families we serve are unable to afford to adequately care for their children.

Iron Order Motorcycle Club’s Philly Chapter Charity Ride Brings Children’s Items, Money and Invaluable Volunteer Time to Cradles to Crayons

They describe themselves as “veterans, active duty military, construction workers, truck drivers, businessmen, cops, feds, cooks, and any other occupation you can think of – from different backgrounds and walks of life.”

Meet the Death Grip Chapter of the Iron Order Motorcycle Club, Philadelphia area men who share a common bond with Club members throughout the United States, and who are unabashedly all about motorcycles, brotherhood and enjoying the biker lifestyle.

And this Saturday they will come together to do something else in which they take pride: participating in charities that benefit their communities. In this instance, a Charity Ride for Cradles to Crayons.

Some 50 members of the club, as well as other bikers, and a number of participants in its women's support group, the Iron Order Maidens, will bike from King of Prussia to West Conshohocken, bringing with them money they’ve raised and new children’s socks and underwear they have collected, and will provide it to Cradles to Crayons for distribution by the local nonprofit to children in the region living in poverty.

Cradles to Crayons provides children, 0 – 12, living in homeless or low-income situations in the Greater Philadelphia area with the essential items they need to thrive – at  home, at school and at play, and supplies the items free of charge year-round by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need

Death Grip Chapter President Iron Wrench points out that this is not the crew’s first trip to Cradles to Crayons. “We learned about them when we were looking for a charity to support last Christmas; the wife of one of our members was very active there.” When the club members came to the warehouse to bring the donations collected from its holiday drive, “we were so impressed with the work they do for children in need,” he said, “that we committed to come back and volunteer.” Which it did, a month later. “We’ve been planning this Saturday’s charity ride since then.”

In addition to the money they’ve raised for the event and thenew children’s socks and underwear they’ve collected, the club members will also spend time on Saturday doing more of the same – sorting, inspecting, cleaning and packing donated clothing, footwear, toys, books, and school supplies into KidPacks, seven-day supplies of everyday essentials for area children in-need.The Iron Order Motorcycle Club has chapters in all 50 United States and on every continent. It will mark its 10th anniversary in July 2014.

Cradles to Crayons-Philadelphia Names Bob Aglira New Board Chairman Organization Founder, Former Board Chair Jennifer Case Honored for ‘Vision, Commitment’

Cradles to Crayons-Philadelphia announced today that Bob Aglira, who has served as a volunteer and advisor to the regional nonprofit since shortly after its inception, and board member over the past year, has been elected chairman of the board. He succeeds Jennifer Case, who established the local affiliate of the Boston-based organization in 2007 and has been its board chair since then.

“Jennifer Case played such a key role in launching Cradles to Cradles to Crayons six years ago,” said Lynn Margherio, the organization’s founder and CEO. “She has adopted – and adapted for the Greater Philadelphia community – the Cradles to Crayons’ model, and can be very proud of the hearty and healthy sibling she has raised.”

Cradles to Crayons, founded in Boston in 2002, provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at  home, at school and at play, and supplies the items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need.

Aglira’s appointment as chair of the local board and as a member of the national board in Boston was confirmed at the national board’s quarterly meeting. “The local organization has gained recognition since its establishment, not only for its role in addressing the poverty faced by children in the Greater Philadelphia region, but also as the area’s go-to volunteer organization,” said Margherio.

Cradles to Crayons-Philadelphia has distributed more than one million essential children’s items to 100,000-plus disadvantaged and underserved children in the past five years, and provides invaluable civic opportunities for 1,300-plus volunteers each month.

“We feel fortunate to have initially attracted Bob to our organization,” said Michal Smith, executive director, “and are confident that his understanding of and belief in our mission will enable Cradles to Crayons-Philadelphia to tackle the daunting challenge of poverty among children and its long-term impact on their lives and the social and economic health of the community.

Aglira is a clinical faculty member with the Fox Management Consulting program at Temple University’s Fox School of Business, joining that team following his retirement from Mercer, where he had been a worldwide partner for theglobal human resources consulting firm. He practiced in the human resource consulting business for more than three decades.

“I find the opportunity to serve Cradles to Crayons in this capacity both exciting and fulfilling," said Aglira. “The families of the 400,000 young children today in the Greater Philadelphia region who live in poverty – across our urban, suburban and rural communities – look to us, working through the area’s families, businesses, religious, education and social service organizations, and others, to aggressively and creatively provide them with needed assistance. I see this as a unique opportunity for Cradles to Crayons to make an even deeper and wider imprint here.”

A graduate of University of Maryland (M.S. applied mathematics) and Temple University (B.A. mathematics), is married, has three children, and resides in Malvern, Pa.

Thousands of Area Families Receive Free Diapers: Cradles to Crayons Distributes 200,000+ Huggies Diapers To 75+ Greater Philadelphia Region Social Service Agencies

With her agency's diaper allocation packed in her car, ready to be provided to children served by ChesPenn Health Services, Jashina Miller is joined by Cradles to Crayons' distribution coordinator, Kristen Gowing.

More than 75 Greater Philadelphia region social service agencies – including homeless and domestic violence shelters, schools, and foster homes that provide direct assistance to children – received quantities of free diapers from Cradles to Crayons Friday, when the local nonprofit distributed more than 200,000 of the essential product from its West Conshohocken warehouse.

The diapers were provided to Cradles to Crayons by the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN), through thesupport of its founding sponsor, Huggies.® Montgomery County-based Foundation for Babies assisted local distribution.

Cradles to Crayons was named an NDBN Affiliate Partner earlier this year – the only program in the Middle Atlantic States to receive the recognition – based on “its demonstrated ability to distribute diapers through a large network of agencies and its potential for growth,” said Alison Weir, director of programs at NDBN.

“Diapers are a basic need for children, as essential to their health and well-being as food and shelter,” said Michal Smith, executive director of Cradles to Crayons, noting that a recent study reported that 34 percent of American families cut back on basics such as food, utilities and child care to purchase diapers for their children.

  • Without diapers, a mom cannot place a child in daycare, which prevents her from going to school or work to break the cycle of poverty in the family.
  • At a rate of six diapers per day, an adequate supply of diapers can cost over $100 per month.
  • Diapers cannot be purchased with food stamps, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (“SNAP”) or the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance for Women Infants and Children (“WIC”).  As a result, families in need must draw on their limited funds to buy diapers.
  • Most people living in poverty do not have affordable access to washing facilities, and most coin-operated self-service laundries do not allow customers to wash cloth diapers, for health reasons.
  • The vast majority of licensed day care centers do not accept cloth diapers, and require parents and caregivers to provide a steady supply of disposable diapers.

“There are some 100,000 children, 0 to 24 months,in our community in poverty-stricken situations,” said Smith. “This distribution is a godsend for them!”
