Cradles to Crayons Region-Wide Collection to Support
Greater Philadelphia's Martin Luther King Day of Service,
Monday, January 20, 2014

Local Organizations Invited to Provide Drop-Off Points for Donations

Cradles to Crayons, the local nonprofit that combats the effects of poverty faced by children in the Greater Philadelphia area, will conduct a region-wide drive on Monday, January 20, to collect essential everyday items for disadvantaged children, ages 0-12, in support of the annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

Cradles to Crayons encourages the general public to donate new and gently used infants’ and children’s clothing, warm coats, hats, gloves, shoes, boots, newborn baby items, baby safety equipment, toys, books and school supplies. Collection sites, manned by Cradles to Crayons’ volunteers, will be in place on Monday, January 20, at a number of firehouses, schools, and other locations across the Greater Philadelphia region.

In addition, Cradles to Crayons will host an on-site donation processing event at its warehouse, where volunteers will sort, inspect, clean and prepare the donated items for inclusion in KidPacks – a week’s supply of everyday essentials “ordered” by area social service agencies for individual children in their care – which will be picked up from the warehouse and delivered to the children at no cost.

“We will have numerous collection points throughout the Greater Philadelphia region,” said Cradles to Crayons outreach manager, Jeff Baxter. “We encourage any organization that wants to be included in this important initiative to join us and serve as a drop-off site for the day. The more collection points we have, the more items we will be able to supply to children living in low-income and/or homeless situations.”

Organizations interested in serving as a donation drop-off site can contact Jeff at jeff@cradlestocrayons.org or 215-836-0958, ext. 210.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Donates More Than 40,000 Books to Cradles to Crayons

Major Book Donation to Cradles to Crayons by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Thousands of children living in poverty in Massachusetts are starting 2014 with a gift of books, a gift that promises to keep on giving throughout their lifetimes! Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), a Boston-based global education leader, donated more than 40,000 books to Cradles to Crayons - Boston.

“So many families living in poverty in our area struggle to afford to provide shelter and food for their families," said Sharon Reilly, Executive Director, Cradles to Crayons - Boston. “Add to that the critical need to provide warm clothing at this time of the year, and there simply is no money remaining to purchase books. We can’t ignore the very sad fact that children from low-income families will start the first grade up to two years behind their peers from moderate- to upper-income households."

Reading Is Fundamental, the nation's largest children's literacy nonprofit, reports that two-thirds of America’s children living in poverty have no books at home. Children who do not have access to books and do not read regularly are at risk of failing to achieve basic levels of reading proficiency. Children who are solid readers perform better in school, have a healthy self-image, and become lifelong learners, adding to their viability in a competitive world.

“This donation,” Reilly continued, “is especially welcome as it provides substantial quantities of infant board books and books for 9-12 year-olds, groups for which demand always far exceeds our supply!”
