Cradles to Crayons receives 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator for 6th straight year

PHILADELPHIA, April 29, 2014 – Local nonprofit Cradles to Crayons has earned Charity Navigator's highest rating of 4-stars for the sixth straight year– one of only three percent of the more than 7,000 of America’s best-known charities rated by the nation's premier charity rating service  to achieve that mark.

Charity Navigator helps guide intelligent giving by evaluating the financial health, accountability and transparency of more than 7,000 charities, disclosing basic information on the remainder of the 1.4 million U.S. nonprofits, and providing donors with the tools to conduct their own evaluation of individual charities.

"Cradles to Crayons is thrilled to receive another outstanding rating from Charity Navigator,” said Michal Smith, executive director of Cradles to Crayons - Philadelphia. “It confirms our commitment and efficiency in carrying out our mission in the local nonprofit community. We always aim to be a fiscally responsible organization while increasing the capacity and outreach of our programs to assist children of low-income and homeless families in the Greater Philadelphia region. The Charity Navigator 4-star rating is a testament to our thoughtful business practices."

Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play. Working through its network of nearly 250 human services agency partners, and supported by 20,000 volunteers, Cradles to Crayons annually helps more than 50,000 children living in poverty in the Greater Philadelphia region

For every dollar raised by Cradles to Crayons, 90.2 percent is spent on direct program expenses. Cradles to Crayons consistently achieves its organizational mission and responsibility to serve families in-need in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, as well as its responsibility to donors, supporters and volunteers – a mission and work that has been recognized by Charity Navigator as being executed in a fiscally exceptional manner, outperforming most other charities in America.

Charity Navigator, the most-utilized charity evaluator in America, also offers tips, expert commentary, complementary tools, and popular Top 10 lists to help donors make informed choices about where their contributions will be used most effectively. Its unbiased rating system shows givers how efficiently a charity will use their support today, how well it has sustained its programs and services over time, and their level of commitment to good governance, best practices and openness with information.

C2C's Gear Up for Baby Program Featured on WCVB-TV's CityLine Program

Karen Holmes Ward interviews Julie Lima on CityLine about the C2C Gear Up for Baby programKaren Holmes Ward, host of WCVB-TV's award-winning urban news and feature magazine program CityLine, interviews C2C Director of Development Julie Lima on the program's Mother's Day show. The theme of the show is "Caretakers," focusing on local non-profits Rosie's Place and Cradles to Crayons as well as the community focused work being done by Reverend Liz Walker.

Rosie's Place has been empowering women to rebuild their lives for four decades. They celebrate their 40th anniversary this year, serving an estimated 12,000 women a year with housing and education services.

Following Rosie's Place, the show's focus shifts to the C2C Gear Up for Baby program and how buying basic essentials for young children can cause many area families financial strain. The Gear Up for Baby program works to provide local infants and toddlers living in homeless and low-income situations with all the necessities they need to thrive.

The show wraps up with Reverend Liz Walker who spent years telling the Boston area about the news and current events as the first African American weeknight Anchor. Now as a senior pastor for the Roxbury Presbyterian Church and board chair for their Social Impact Center, she talks about her most recent work.

The show airs Sunday, May 11, 2014 at 12:00PM on WCVB-TV channel 5.

Diane Patrick to serve as Honorary Chair for Cradles to Crayons Gear Up for Baby program in 2014

0
0

BOSTON - May 15, 2014 - Local non-profit organization Cradles to Crayons is pleased to announce that First Lady of Massachusetts, Diane Patrick, will be the Honorary Chair of the Cradles to Crayons Gear Up for Baby Program.

With Mother's Day in May and Father's Day in June, Cradles to Crayons is focusing on its Gear Up for Baby program to collect and distribute items for infants and toddlers which are in chronically short supply at its “Giving Factory” warehouse in Brighton. From strollers, car-seats, toys and books, to bath, bedding, and hygiene products, Gear Up for Baby helps get parents equipped with the items they need to promote safety and healthy development in their child's first years.

In 2014, Cradles to Crayons will receive over 14,000 requests to help Massachusetts children age 0- to 3-years-old. The Gear Up for Baby program aims to raise awareness of and support for this critical need. The goal during the months of May and June is to generate enough funding and in-kind product donations to fill 7,000+ of these orders.

“I am happy and honored to be Honorary Chair for Cradles to Crayons’ Gear Up for Baby program,” Mrs. Patrick commented. “It is a privilege to be working to support the work of Cradles to Crayons in order to serve the children in Massachusetts who are most vulnerable.”

There are more than 300,000 children living in low-income or homeless situations in Massachusetts; 80,000 of these children are infants and toddlers. In the first year of life alone, it can cost a family of four living in the Northeast over $10,000 to provide the everyday essential items that children need to be safe, healthy and thrive. Many families are unable to afford essential baby basics. For children lacking these essential items, healthy development becomes challenging. These are a few of the facts that describe the need Cradles to Crayons addresses by collecting and distributing new and gently-used clothing, toys, books, and safety items.

“We are thrilled that Diane Patrick is the Honorary Chair of this important program,” said Sharon Reilly, Executive Director, Cradles to Crayons - Boston. “She is a passionate and committed leader in Massachusetts, as well as a mother and grandmother. We are honored that she is supporting this program by lending her voice and presence to help us provide essential items to more than 14,000 little ones this year.”

Individuals, families, corporations, faith-based organizations, and community groups are encouraged to participate in Cradles to Crayons’ Gear Up for Baby program this spring by hosting “C2C Baby Showers” to collect items from Cradles to Crayons’ most-needed items list for infants and toddlers. To learn more about the Gear Up for Baby program, visit Cradles to Crayons’ website at www.cradlestocrayons.org/gearupforbaby.

Sponsors for the 2014 Gear Up for Baby program include WCVB-TV, DigitasLBi, BNY Mellon, Dorel Juvenile, Arbella Insurance Foundation, and P&G Gillette.
